Calculation of Fees
The Masters of Education in Educational Practice (MEd EP) is a per-semester fee program, unlike the Graduate Diploma in Education (GDE), which is a per-credit fee program.  Students in per semester fee programs are required to register in every semester until all requirements for their degree have been fulfilled.  However, in exceptional circumstances, students may register as on leave for a semester (see “On Leave Status” below).  A student who does not register at all in a semester is considered to have withdrawn from the program.

Registration

You are required to register each semester via the university’s on-line registration system (at https://go.sfu.ca); the Field Programs staff will not do this for you.  Registration is opened about two months prior to the beginning of each semester; the Field Programs office will notify you when the system is open each semester via your SFU e-mail account.  In order to register you will require:

  • The class number for the course(s) you are to register for (the Field Programs office will include this information in a registration e-mail each semester);
  • A credit balance of at least $100 in your account (you must check your account and deposit the appropriate amount at least 3-4 days before you intend to register to allow time for processing).

It is very important that you meet the registration deadline in this program – if you are not registered before your first class, you will be withdrawn from the program.

The balance of your fees must be paid by the 15th of the first month of the university semester (i.e. September 15, January 15 or May 15) or you will begin to accrue late fee penalties.

Fee payment

Fees may be paid by one of the following methods.  Please note that all payment methods require your student number.

  • Internet banking through your personal financial institution.  (If your bank requires a 10-digit number, add a “0” to the beginning of your student number.)
  • Direct payment at Student Services, Burnaby Campus (MBC 3000). Payment can also be made at SFU Harbour Centre and SFU Surrey. (This service is free of charge.  You will need to know what fees are due—the Student Services staff may not be able to tell you this.)
  • Cheque or money order payable to Simon Fraser University sent to Field Programs (MEd: EP), Faculty of Education, Simon Fraser University, 8888 University Drive, Burnaby BC V5A 1S6.

On Leave Status

As a semester-based program, continuous registration is required for the MEd EP. Therefore, if it is necessary for you to go on-leave for a semester, the on-leave fee will apply instead of the regular semester fees. Approval must be sought using an On-leave Graduate Registration Form prior to the beginning of the semester and only in exceptional circumstances can the fee be waived. If you have not registered and no on-leave form has been received by the first class, then you will be considered to have withdrawn from the program.

Withdrawals

Students in per-semester fee programs are not eligible for refunds for withdrawing from individual courses. In the case of withdrawals from the program, refunds will be calculated from the date official notification is received in writing

Please note that withdrawing from a semester is equivalent to withdrawing from the program. To remain in the program, on-leave status is required (see above).

Tuition Fee Certificates

Fee certificates issued by the SFU Professional Development Program for supervision of student teachers may be applied to fees in an MEd EPdegree. The certificate value is calculated at the prevailing per-credit rate for undergraduate course fees. Students using Tuition Fee Certificates who have not been SFU School Associates may use only one 4-credit Tuition Fee Certificate per semester.
