Application Guidelines for the
Master of Education degree in Educational Practice

Application packages must be received by May 15 for the Fall/September cohort and/or February 1 for the Summer/May cohort.  Incomplete application packages or application packages received after the deadline will not be considered. Your complete application package will include all of the materials described below and must be submitted together, at one time.

  • Application cover sheet
  • Completed "Application for Admission to the Master of Education: Educational Practice" form
  • A reflective paper which demonstrates a synthesis of theory and practice by describing significant understandings and ways that your practice has been transformed as a result of your work during the Graduate Diploma Program.  Along with your successes and accomplishments, you are invited to discuss any challenges, contradictions, and conflicts that you experienced.  (Maximum 1500 words, 4-6 pages, double-spaced).
    • Reflect on the most significant insights/new understandings you gained during the diploma.
    • How do they relate to your philosophy (beliefs and understandings about teaching and learning)?
    • What were the most significant ideas from readings, and/or educational thinkers that influenced your learning?
    • What impact has your diploma experience had on your practice? 
    • How are you participating differently in educational communities?
  • A proposal for further study that outlines your research passions and interests which frames possible directions for future inquiries. [Maximum 600 words; approximately 2 pages double-spaced]
    • What issues or questions about teaching capture your interest?
    • What do you foresee will be the focus of your inquiry?
  • Three confidential letters of reference must be included with your application in the envelopes provided. Each letter of reference must be accompanied by the signed Request for Confidential Letter of Reference cover sheet, and must be sealed and signed by each referee. They may not be sent by fax or email. Letters must be specific to this application and must address the criteria mentioned below in relation to your suitability for work at the graduate level. They must be obtained from all three of the following sources:
    • one from a graduate diploma instructional team member (mentor, instructor or faculty associate) who is very familiar with your work as a teacher researcher. This letter should address your:
      • willingness to engage critically with literature
      • commitment to inquiry
      • contributions to the learning of others
      • capacity for critical thinking (e.g., ability to articulate, act on and synthesize ideas)
      • response to challenges and obstacles in your practice
    • one letter from an individual who can speak to the impact your inquiry has had on others (e.g. at the classroom-level, school-level, district-level or in other educational contexts).  This letter should address your:
      • contributions to the learning of others
      • capacity for critical thinking (e.g., ability to articulate, act on and synthesize ideas)
      • response to challenges and obstacles in your practice
    • one additional letter from an individual who can speak to your:
      • commitment to inquiry
      • capacity for critical thinking (e.g., ability to articulate, act on and synthesize ideas
